    How business valuation actually works

Buyers of private South African businesses pay for profit they believe will continue without you. That is why almost every offer starts as a multiple of normalised annual profit.

    1. Normalise the profit

Strip out once-off items and above-market owner salaries to get the profit a new owner would really earn.

    2. Apply an industry multiple

Manufacturing, services, logistics and tech all trade in different ranges. We use SA market ranges, not US benchmarks.

    3. Adjust for risk

Customer concentration, owner dependence, contract quality and record keeping move the multiple up or down.

    4. Add or subtract the balance sheet

Surplus cash and property are added; interest-bearing debt comes off. That gives you what lands in your pocket.

    Typical South African profit multiples
    • Owner-run small business: roughly 2x – 4x annual profit
    • Established business with a management team: roughly 4x – 6x
    • Recurring revenue, licensed or scarce assets: 6x and above

These are indicative ranges. Your actual range depends on the answers you give in the calculator above.

    Business valuation questions, answered

How do I work out what my business is worth in South Africa?

Most South African private companies are valued on a multiple of annual profit (EBITDA). You take a normalised profit figure, apply a multiple for your industry, then adjust for size, growth, customer concentration, owner dependence and how clean your financial records are. Our free business valuation tool does this in about two minutes and gives you an indicative range, not a single number.

Is the business valuation really free?

Yes. The calculator is free and there is no obligation. You get an indicative value range, the multiple used and the biggest levers that could increase your value. If you want a formal, defensible valuation for a sale, dispute or funding application, we quote that separately as a fixed fee.

What profit multiple do small businesses sell for in South Africa?

As a rule of thumb, owner-run SMEs trade between roughly 2x and 4x normalised annual profit, established businesses with management in place between 4x and 6x, and scarce, high-growth or licensed businesses above that. Industry, recurring revenue and how dependent the business is on the owner move the number most.

What information do I need before I start?

Your industry, how many years you have been trading, last full year turnover, annual profit before tax and interest, and a rough growth rate. Nothing confidential is required to get your range.

Does the valuation include property, stock or debt?

The tool values the trading business (enterprise value). Surplus property, excess cash and interest-bearing debt are added or subtracted afterwards to get to what you would actually receive. We cover that with you on the follow-up call.
